El Santuario de Chimayo - A Place of Culture

El Santuario de Chimayo is the center of the unique art and culture of northern New Mexico. Within the walls of El Santuario and Santo Niño chapels can be found wonderful works of Hispanic art, including several santos and religious frescoes. El Santuario is often the starting or destination point for peregrinos and penitentes. It is the site of the dubbing of Don Juan Oñate and the crowning of La Reina in the summer and of posadas in the winter. It is a place where you may see Matachines or La Danza Azteca groups perform.
